Events Calendar
The following information and guidelines relates to all HMG events.
Inclement weather or insufficient numbers attending may mean the event is cancelled or rescheduled at short notice. Although we will make best effort to inform HMG members in good time if there are issues, you should always contact the organiser:
To register your interest
To confirm exact meeting point if not specified precisely in the article
To confirm that the event has not been called off, especially if you intend to travel a long way
If you don't already have the email address of the event organiser, please contact them via HMG's email address; your message
will be forwarded to them. GDPR does not allow us to give their address without their consent
Start times are 'prompt' please; end times (when given) are approximate. Times are given in 24 hour clock, unless stated to the
contrary
Due to insurance requirements, if you are not a fully paid-up member of HMG, you may not be able to attend or we may restrict what we allow you to do in our outdoor activities
Indoor events may incur an entry fee to cover costs (speaker/room hire). All events are arranged by HMG unless indicated to the contrary
Previous events can be viewed on the Archived Events Calendar page.

Thursday, 12th January 2023 – 2 talks are planned.
Paul Smith – Ship rats in the UK
Paul is a new member of HMG and has expressed an interest in becoming our new chairperson. He has always had an active interest in mammals and is now keen to get more involved in this through our group. Come and support him as he tells us about a project he undertook and published. Black rats are rarer in the UK than the hazel dormouse but afford no protection…
Stuart Moore – An update on our Harvest Mouse Surveys
Stuart has been HMG’s lead on Harvest Mouse surveys for the past couple of years. He’s done an excellent job and has had a great level of success in both training folk and executing the surveys. Come and hear how he has got on and consider if you can help out with the work planned for next year.
Bartestree Village Hall, 7:30pm
Thursday, 26th January 2023
Melissa Norton - Bats and ponds: a preview of her work soon to be published by BCT
Online Zoom event, time to be confirmed
Thursday, 23rd February 2023
Johnny Birks - Pine marten update
Bartestree Village Hall, 7:30pm
As a local, Johnny is well known to many of us in HMG and is one of our leading experts on both mustelids and bats, as well as a national specialist on mammals. He will be giving pine marten updates on the Forestry of Dean reintroduction and the south Shropshire ‘population’ - which almost certainly extends into north Herefordshire!
Thursday, 23rd March 2023
Rick Minter - Big Cats
Bartestree Village Hall, 7:30pm
Some of you will remember Rick’s memorable presentation several years ago, complete with cuddly lookalike big cats!
Rick is a Big Cat author and podcaster. His presentation title, “Britain’s big cat theory – beyond the extraordinary claim” will be an illustrated talk to support the ongoing reports of panthers, pumas and lynx. The event will conclude with discussion points and witness reports with particular reference to Herefordshire. Will you ever walk the byways or woodlands alone again after hearing what he’s got to say?
